Northern Coasts 2014 - The Exercise Begins

The two week long Northern Coast 2014 (NOCO14) exercise, arranged in August and September is the Navy's main exercise this year. Participating in a multinational exercise trains the personnel, reservists and conscripts of the Finnish Defence Forces in acting in international crisis management tasks, which is the third main task of the Finnish Defence Forces. At the same time the exercise also strengthens the development of our national defence. The main aim of the Northern Coasts exercise is to improve the multinational interoperability between the participating troops. The shallow and shoaly waters along the Finnish coast offer challenging exercise conditions where naval activity is supported by airborne and special troops. The fictive exercise scenario is based on a crisis management operation where security threats are presented by terrorism, piracy and smuggling. The exercise will be commanded by the Chief of Staff of the Finnish Navy, Commodore Juha Vauhkonen. Harjoitus on järjestetty vuodesta 2007 alkaen. Harjoitus on suunnattu NATO-, EU- ja PfP-maille. Viime vuosina harjoitukseen on osallistunut 10-15 maata.  Harjoituksen päätehtävänä on kehittää osallistuvien joukkojen monikansallista yhteistoimintakykyä ja  vaativissa matalissa ja karikkoisissa olosuhteissa tuettuna ilma- ja erikoisjoukkojen operaatiolla.  Harjoituksen kuvitteellisena tilanteena on kriisinhallintaoperaatio, jonka turvallisuusuhkia ovat muun muassa terrorismi, merirosvous ja salakuljetus. Harjoituksen johtaa merivoimien esikuntapäällikkö, lippueamiraali Juha Vauhkonen.
