“Many regions in the tropics are experiencing hotter and drier periods as a result of global climatic changes. I use high-powered lasers, namely terrestrial and airborne LiDAR, to map forests over time as a tool to understand how tropical forest ecosystems are responding to climatic changes. I have spent years in places like Borneo and Amazonia looking at trees and have found surprising results that are both concerning and positive. Disseminating these results may be of particular interest to those engaged in mitigating biodiversity loss and reducing the carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere.” Matheus Nunes is a tropical forest ecologist and a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Geosciences and Geography, Faculty of Science. He was born and raised in a diverse region in Brazil, and has always been stimulated by and curious about the natural world that surrounds him.
