“My research explores the importance of Indigenous Peoples’ stewardship practices and knowledge systems for biodiversity conservation. Based on my long-term, field-based ethnographic engagement with different Indigenous groups (e.g., Tsimane’ in Bolivia, Daasanach and Maasai in Kenya), my work examines the unique contributions of Indigenous Peoples safeguarding a substantial proportion of our world’s biological and cultural diversity. The results of my work highlight that the knowledge systems, practices and values of Indigenous Peoples play fundamental roles in supporting and achieving local, regional and planetary sustainability.” Álvaro Fernández-Llamazares is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS). In the face of growing pressures against Indigenous Peoples, and unprecedented global biodiversity and climate crises, his research findings provide a set of evidence-based arguments why foregrounding Indigenous Peoples’ rights and agencies is essential to the success of future environmental policy.
