What did you do when there was still time? – Waterwise
― Elokapina – Extinction Rebellion Finland
What did you do when there was still time? / Waterwise I've heard all the stories from when you were young How you flew off to Thailand for a week in the sun You drank juice from Papaya & mango & lime Was that all you did when there was still time? Was that all you did when there was still time? When you were thirsty you drank from the tap You even used fresh water to crap Now wasting water & food is a crime Daddy, what did you do when there was still time? Daddy, what did you do when there was still time? Tell me again about the winters with snow Tell me about all the fruits you could grow when there were bees & something called wine Daddy, what did you do when there was still time? Daddy, what did you do when there was still time? Aaah.. I think we're happier now as it seems When you spoke of connection you referred to your screens and not to each other or to the divine Daddy, what did you do when there was still time? Daddy, what did you do when there was still time? You said you were lost, that you didn't belong You were fooled, you were bossed, but you knew all along Now we pay the cost, and our anger is strong Aah.. Daddy, what did you do when there was still time? Daddy, what did you do when there was still time? Daddy, what did you do when there was still time? We met when we joined Extinction Rebellion—a radical movement to force our governments to take action concerning the ongoing mass extinction & climate crisis. The next day we were dancing for life in the streets of Helsinki. But we fell in love on Gotland. We had 3 days together & pitched our tent in a nature reserve in the middle of the night. We drank water from a well, and in the middle of the night it started to speak to us in images. Gotland was formed hundreds of millions of years ago, from layers of fossiled sealife. The springwater came through these limestone layers, carrying memories. It had a message of hope & healing because at that time there was a global warming by 6-8 degrees, even though it took 1000 years. The poles had tropical temperatures & the primates were created at this time—our ancestors! The water urged us to sing together & encourage people to let love flow freely & to surrender to the great depths of the soul. We recorded this song in february 2020. It is a story from the perspective of our imaginary children. They have just found out that the climate has spiraled beyond salvation due to the many feedback loops... (methane from melting permafrost, the albedo effect, melting glaciers etc.) They are furious and demand answers & accountability: What did you do when there was still time? After filming the music video we discovered that we were pregnant. We pray that we will use this window of oppurtunity—only a few years—to rise up against a system that promotes greed & loneliness. That is killing all life. Life is a miracle. When we come together —miracles happen naturally.
