Neutron-rich Nuclei

Jyväskylän yliopisto

Anu Kankainen, Academy Research Fellow – Department of Physics. Project Maiden aims to better understand how chemical elements have been, or are made in stars. In October 2017, the first detection of gravitational waves produced by colliding neutron stars was made. This discovery combined with electro-magnetic radiation from the same event gave the first direct evidence that heavy elements are being synthesized in such events. We need accurate nuclear data in order to interpret these observations.
