Pulped Fictions

Eric Hynynen

Concept: Pulp Fiction refers to the novels and magazines of the first half of the 20th century, which were printed on cheap pulp paper. The works were fantastic, escapist fiction for the general entertainment of mass audiences. The video installation Pulped Fictions is a tribute to the crime genre. It is constructed entirely from the cover images of Jerry Cotton novels. The novels were popular mostly in German speaking countries, but also in Finland. The novels follow the adventures of Jerry Cotton, a fictional FBI agent operating in New York. The video creates a cinematic mood, using the Jerry Cotton cover stills, which were initially borrowed straight from Hollywood. The dramatic soundtrack makes use of samples from crime/gangster movies and television shows. The work attempts to convey the idea or essence of the crime novel, without the use of direct narrative.
