Search instructions
Basic search
You can search all types of material, or tweets, videos and webpages only. A free text or URL search can be used to search webpages. The main search of the Web Archive returns results from all contents of the Web Archive. Search in Web pages, Tweets, or Videos returns results from thematic harvests only.
You can enter a web address either in the form http://www.address.fi or without the prefix in the form www.address.fi. You can also search separate pages with a web address, such as www.address.fi/index/page.html.
The search results indicate the dates on which the relevant page was archived. By clicking on a date, you can view the page content as it was on the date in question. The number following the date indicates the times the page was harvested on the date in question.
You can find more advanced search terms under Show/hide more search terms. You can refine the search by harvest type and dates and sort the results by harvest dates or relevance.
The URL search currently covers all harvests completed before 2023.
In addition to using the URL search, you can also search directly in the content of the archived webpages, videos and tweets by words or free text.
Thematic harvests
You can use the search box above the list of thematic harvests to search the harvests by name, year or description.
Web page search
The free text search is focused on thematic harvests.
Video search
Videos can be found with the free text search.
Under Show/hide more search terms, you can narrow the results by the name of the YouTube channel or publisher. You can also refine the results with specific hashtags (#), by a thematic harvest or by harvest dates. In addition, you can sort the results by harvest dates or relevance.
The exact publication timestamp for some videos is unknown, therefore their publication timestamp is set to 00:00:00.
Tweet search
You can search tweets only on legal deposit terminals, with which you can search tweets with specific words.
Under Show/hide more search terms, you can narrow the results by the name of the Twitter user or the Twitter account, with selected hashtags (#), or by thematic harvest or dates of harvest. In addition, you can sort the results by harvest dates or relevance. Select Also search retweets and quote tweets if you wish to include them.
Free text search
In addition to using the URL search, you can also search directly in the content of the archived webpages, videos and tweets by words or free text.
- The displayed results contain at least one of the search words.
- If you wish to see only the pages with all of the words used in the search, combine the words with AND. If you search, for example, with football AND Haka, the results will contain both the words football and Haka.
- You can also exclude pages containing a specific word by using NOT in front of the word. If you search, for example, with football NOT Haka, the search results will contain the word football but not the word Haka.
- Search with phrases using quotation marks ("). E.g., "president Koivisto".
- Search terms are not case sensitive, upper or lower case may be used.
- Inflectional forms of a word matter.
- An asterisk (*) may be used as a wildcard. If you search for, for example, sport*, the search results will contain any inflectional form of the word sport.
- A wildcard query with only an asterisk (*) returns all results in the collection.
- You can narrow the search by start date and/or end date.
The free text search currently covers only the thematic harvests that took place before 2023. Material archived through the domain harvest of all Finnish online resources as well as online newspaper harvests cannot be found with the free text search.
