Raphael’s participation has sparked protests and she faces being booed on stage over Israel’s war on Gaza. In rehearsals, so far, crowds have cheered her. Israel has been part of the Eurovision Song Contest since 1973. Its participation is not a token invitation, but based on its geographical location as defined by the European Broadcasting Union during the interwar period as they drew up lines to prevent interference in radio transmissions. Australia has also participated in the contest since 2015, doing so by invitation.
