Lappeenranta is a former industrial and garrison municipality, but now, it is a center of green technology and energy research. Lappeenranta has been chosen twice as the WWF Earth Hour Capital and is the winner of the European Green Leaf Award 2021. Concrete actions towards sustainability include, among other things, switching to renewable electricity, teaching sustainable development in schools for younger generations and circular economy.
