To balance energy consumption peaks, cold and heat are stored in giant accumulators. The accumulators are the reason for creating a new lake in Finland, country of 50,000 lakes. District heating and cooling systems operate almost entirely in places where the sun doesn't shine. Nearly one hundred metres beneath Helsinki's Esplanade Park is a district cooling reservoir about the size of an average Finnish lake. Thirty-five million litres of water are directed into the reservoir from Lake Päijänne. The water is cold and clear.
