Extreme metal music as transgression in Iran and Saudi Arabia | Pasqualina Eckerström

Tiedekulma

Pasqualina (Paky) Eckerström examines the development of extreme metal music in Iran and Saudi Arabia. “I investigate if musicians and audiences in two states that closely monitor cultural consumption perceive this music as religiously transgressive and as an instrument for political and social change. The study will provide a contemporary analysis of how popular culture can be used to rebel and impact political and religious orientations in conservative Muslim countries.” Paky Eckerström is a doctoral student in the Study of Religion, Faculty of Arts. Having worked as a music journalist for many years, her interest in music has crossed paths with her love for social and cultural studies. The video was recorded on 11 May 2021 at Uuden tiedon klubi, a series of events where researchers at the University of Helsinki give short popular talks on what they are studying right now.
