#Vappuathome – Helsinki offered a once-in-a-lifetime virtual May Day party

Helsingin kaupunki

Finland's annual May Day celebrations gather yearly tens of thousands of people to the public parks in the capital city of Helsinki to celebrate the beginning of the summer season. The year 2020 was set to be different: no street parties, no traditional park picnics, no concerts or any other offline events for that matter were allowed. After the long spring term spent indoors in corona quarantine, people deserved a jolt of joy. “The once-in-a-lifetime #vappuathome” (#etävappu) invited Finns to celebrate Vappu 2020 like never before. The City of Helsinki encouraged people to stay at home and invited the entire country to a virtual concert, together with many other online concerts. A new phenomenon, “The once-in-a-lifetime #vappuathome” was created. It turned out to be a great success, both locally and internationally.
