MUU Kaapeli: Suvi Härkönen & Pavel Ekrias: MELKEIN (ALMOST), 2015

MUUgalleria

Suvi Härkönen & Pavel Ekrias: MELKEIN (ALMOST), 9 January – 15 February, 2015, MUU Cable In this exhibition, artists explore the word ‘almost’ by deconstructing its meanings through artistic practice. They have approached the word as a state of being, as an experience or a state of change. Almost is nearly something, but never quite or completely anything. The artists showcase their own experiences of the almost state both in their practice and their everyday life. Suvi Härkönen (b.1982) creates experiential installations in which she explores the potential of light and sound to affect the character of a space. She is particularly interested in the merging of the viewer and the work, a typical feature in installation art, a process in which the viewer provides the form for the experience. Härkönen studied art at the Institute of Design and Fine Arts in Lahti University of Applied Sciences and in the MA degree programme of Visual Culture at Aalto University. Pavel Ekrias (b.1987) graduated as sculptor from the Institute of Design and Fine Arts in Lahti in 2011. Motion is an essential component of his work. He is fascinated by materials: how different materials alter and complement each other, creating space and motion. In his works, he wants to create situations that also embrace the viewer. MARJO LEVLIN - Heading West Coming Back, 09.01.-15.02.2015, MUU Gallery The exhibition tells about late 19th century migration from Finland to the United States. It is also a journey from the village of my youth, Maalahti (Malax), in Swedish-speaking Ostrobothnia, to California and Colorado. The exhibition is about dreams of a better life somewhere else, about memory and how very soon the history of ordinary people passes into oblivion... The past is so much like the present and contemporary immigration.
