MUU Kaapeli - Pia Sirén: BACKDROP, 26.2.-3.4.2016

MUUgalleria

Pia Sirén: Backdrop, an exhibition in MUU Cable (Cable Factory, Helsinki) 26.2.- 3.4.2016 Backdrop is a site-specific landscape collage designed and built specifically for MUU Cable. It is made of construction materials used in landscaping, earthworks and gardening: industrial surfaces (plastic sheets, tarpaulins, landscaping fabrics and membranes), masonry materials (gravel, concrete blocks), and outline drawings made on transparent protective plastic sheets. The theme of the piece is viewing and alternating viewpoints. The gallery appears to be under construction. The viewer must navigate along a narrow path between hanging plastic sheets and membranes. At the back of the gallery, the viewpoint changes; nature becomes a landscape, space becomes a picture. Backdrop is a seemingly random and temporary landscape illusion. The choice of the medium enables beauty; the industrial construction equipment speak an austere and concrete language even though the theme is romantic and poetic. The work is a construct in a very literal sense, but it also explores cultural structures that determine our ideas about nature, landscape imageries and identity. A landscape is a picture that consists of earth, air, sea, forest and mountains, but it is also a space for dreams and desires. Backdrop is an installation that balances between material and illusion, nature and culture, landscape and construction site. This exhibition is generously supported by the Alfred Kordelin Foundation and Arts Promotion Centre Finland. muugalleria@muu.fi, www.muu.fi
