MIRIMARI VÄYRYNEN: PB-15,PY-42,PY-37,PW6 30 October – 29 November 2015, MUU Cable (Cable Factory), Helsinki PB-15,PY-42,PY-37,PW6 is a colour combination. It strikes me as an industrial and artificial hue of green. It symbolises the productional and illusionary character of the works depicting nature in the exhibition. The work as a whole explores environmental issues and our relationship with nature from the perspective of the commodification of decorativeness and landscape or their reification into valorised images. The medium in this work consists of cultivated landscape products such as green plants and spruce trees. I have also copied paintings of national landscapes. The materials selected for the work all reflect the objectifying of the landscape and its harnessing into the service of ideology or the consumer industry. The purpose of commodities, objects and ideas that depict nature is to create a sense of pleasantness and wellness or even to construct the spirit of the nation. When I was making this exhibition, I contemplated several questions: What is the function of popularised representations of landscapes in this day and age? Who can be admitted to build general amenities or a national landscape, and by what means? Whose needs are served by the maintenance of this illusion? The visible components of the works are industrial construction materials. A landscape representation is always a cultural product, a constructed instance arising from meaningful networks of reference and conditioned by cultural habits and notions. The perception of landscape is therefore intimately linked with prevalent issues of identity, culture and the historical period. Landscape, culture and time can also be seen as processes that intrinsically also embrace change. Given such processuality, the denial of change leads to outdated and popularised illusions. This naturally implies a possible collapse of our picture of reality. The installation of the works in the gallery is intentionally unbalanced, they are crinkled or broken. Some of the paintings are melted down to make them lose their distinctive rectangular shape and become messy conglomerations of plastic and paint. This has the effect of making the landscape spill from the picture, melt away and be annihilated. The paintings are used commodities, destroyed illusions or destroyed by illusion.
