What does Finland look and sound like in Luganda, French, Romanian or Russian? Finnphonia – Emigrantica is about getting to the essence of being Finnish. Is it crystallized in Kimi Räikkönen, Nokia and ice hockey? Does it involve thousands of lakes? Does anyone outside Finland’s borders recognize the Finnish ”sisu”? What happens when an immigrant talks about Finland and being Finnish in their own language? Can they convey the message? Is it recognizable? Does a Finn recognize themselves in it? Does an immigrant recognize Finland and being Finnish in the text? Are there confluences with their own country or native tongue? Does language really matter? In the end, is a look enough to convey an emotion, a situation, a scent – even a whole nation? The European Theatre Collective studies these questions with six multilingual and multicultural actors in Finnphonia – Emigrantica. The purpose of the show is to study language and its barriers, as well as ways of expression that cross the boundaries of language. It brings to the stage stories about being Finnish, written by Finnish authors – but this time performed by immigrant artists in Hungarian, French, Danish, Swedish, English, Swahili, Luganda, Romanian, Russian and Finnish. At that time, a Finnish actor performed Finnish texts, selected by immigrants, all over Europe in Finnish, studying the conveyance of the message regardless of the language barriers. The show aims to strengthen the expressive experience independent of language – not only through acting, but also through sound design and visual effects. In addition to looks, gestures and tone of voice people are brought together over the language barriers by sounds, colors and a certain visual collection. The performance is part of The European Theatre Collective’s project that fosters a network of immigrant artists in Finland. The audience will have a chance to participate in open discussions with the group after the shows about being Finnish, immigration and linguistic identity.
