Merja Nieminen & James Andean: 'Re:****Sitruuna ja meduusa' (2014 version) 'Re:****Sitruuna ja meduusa' is a work by visual artist Merja Nieminen and sound artist James Andean. The work exists in several formats - as a short film; as a three-screen video with multichannel sound; and as a 'live' audiovisual installation. The work constructs a dynamic system with 3D graphics and projected sound, creating a virtual environment which shifts and develops in real-time. The work was created in the Processing and MaxMSP programming environments. The projected visual space is a field of strange architecture, environment, and multiple horizons, peopled by strange, somehow familiar organic entities. This projected universe operates on its own laws; familiar, but somehow elusive. These laws appear to be based in sound, or to emit sound: objects turn; the projected world turns… while sound events strike, scurry past, or resonate… Relationships in the work are kept in a delicate balance between clarity and obscurity: Are visible behaviours triggered and controlled by sound, or do their behaviours create sound? Are we listening to their actions, or are we watching them respond to the sounds of their environment? 'Re:****Sitruuna ja meduusa' received an Honorable Mention in the Destellos Competition 2013, Mixed Media category, was shortlisted for the 2014 Lumen Prize and the Fresh Minds Festival Award, and was a longlisted finalist for the Aesthetica Art Prize 2014. 'Re:****Sitruuna ja meduusa', in either installation or film form, has been exhibited as part of the Noise & Whispers exhibition, GV Art Gallery, London; at the New World Symphony's New Works concert in Miami in spring 2014; Robot Festival in Bologna, Italy, 2014; di_stanze Festival of Sound Arts, Daniele Paris Hall, Frosinone, Italy; UVM2013, Buenos Aires, Argentina; SMC 2013, Stockholm; Athens Slingshot, Athens GA, USA; Stockholm Fringe Festival; Col·lectiu Mixtur, 'Nucleus & Periphery', Barcelona; NordArt 2012, Kunstwerk Carlshutte, Budelsdorf/Rendsburg; CMMR 2012, London; NK Gallery, Berlin; and Galleria Aarni, Espoo, Finland.
